Gryffindor House Harry Potter Lexicon

Perhaps the only aspect of the UK tour which isn't as enchanting as the rest of it is the dining on the way. There's no problem with the food or drink, which of course includes Potter's favorite tipple of Butterbeer, a non-alcoholic beverage flavored like cream soda and butterscotch. However, the setting seems jarring as the dining area is designed like a studio backlot cafe which, ironically, fits the theme too well.

Andromeda was related to many dark witches and wizards, such as her own sister Bellatrix Lestrange, and brother-in-law Lucius Malfoy, but she chose to forsake the loyalty to her family in favour of marrying the Muggle-born Ted Tonks. The entrance to the Gryffindor common room (which, in turn, lead to the Gryffindor dormitories) is located behind a large painting of a Fat Lady in a pink silk dress. If you know the right password to tell her, she swings open to reveal a round opening in the wall. The common room contains a lot of squashy armchairs, a fireplace, and tables. The fireplace is connected to the Floo Network, but as it is extremely public except in the dead of night, Gryffindors usually use owls to communicate with their families instead. There's also a notice board, for public announcements such as the date of the next Hogsmeade weekend, but also for notices from individual students seeking to buy or sell secondhand books, or trade Chocolate Frog cards, or similar, as in any school.

The life of a Gryffindor student

There appears to be a good relationship between the school and the village, and the students get on well with the locals. The dormitories are in Ravenclaw Tower, on the west side of Hogwarts. The common room is round and filled with blue hangings and armchairs, has a domed ceiling painted with stars and features a replica statue of Rowena wearing her diadem. Harry also notes that Ravenclaws "have a spectacular view of the surrounding mountains".

Known Slytherins

The ghost of Slytherin house is the Bloody Baron.[16] According to Rowling, Slytherin corresponds roughly to the element of water.[13] The founder of this house is Salazar Slytherin. Hufflepuff is where you will find the most trustworthy and hardworking students. In fact, out of all the houses Hufflepuff has produced the least number of dark witches and wizards. The badger is the symbol of this house, the colours are yellow and black, the Head of House is Professor Pomona Sprout and the common room can be found near the kitchens in Hogwarts. The four House dormitories have secret entrances, generally known only to members of that house and require a password (Gryffindor and Slytherin), riddle answer (Ravenclaw) or ritual (Hufflepuff) in order to gain entrance.

Dumbledore argued in Harry's defence, stating that it was done in self-defence, and that the Ministry has no authority to expel students – such powers are invested in the Headmaster and the Board of Governors. Snape has attempted to have Harry expelled, and he attempted to have Harry's father, James Potter, expelled when they were at Hogwarts together. The only student known to have been expelled is Hagrid, for the murder of Myrtle with an acromantula believed to be the Monster of Slytherin and for opening the Chamber of Secrets – crimes for which Tom Riddle had framed him. According to the school caretaker, Argus Filch, detention meant subjection to various forms of corporal punishment until recently. Arthur Weasley claimed still to bear physical scars inflicted by Apollyon Pringle, Filch's predecessor.

Harry Potter: The Four Hogwarts Houses

They're also witty and can think on their feet, even when challenges arise, but that also means they can be so wrapped up in their own minds they ignore the needs of others. Most exterior scenes were shot on location at Alnwick Castle, but views of the exterior of the entire school were created from shots of Durham Cathedral with a digital spire added to the towers. The Hogwarts Express is a train that carries pupils non-stop from Platform 9¾ at King's Cross station in London to Hogsmeade Station, near Hogwarts. Prefects of the school ride in a separate carriage near the front of the train. The compartments on the train appear to be lettered; in Half-Blood Prince, the "Slug Club" meets in compartment C. There are usually seven secret passages in and out of the school, and in addition, the series describes the use of twin vanishing cabinets to create another.

They enter the tower by giving a password to the Fat Lady, a portrait. The common room is a circular room with a fireplace, tables, and large armchairs and sofas. Two staircases lead to the boys and girls dormitories, though if a boy tries to climb the stairs to the girls' rooms the entire staircase will turn into a slide. The four houses each represent a different type of student that attends Hogwarts and the different ideals of the four Hogwarts founders. Some houses are more popular than others, and some have better reputations, but the houses give every student at the wizarding school a home away from home and a group of people that are similar to them.

If you're a Hufflepuff, you probably have a deep sense of empathy and compassion for the people around you, and consistently look out for the underdog. They're more three-dimensional than people give them credit for because as much as Slytherins care about their goals, they're also incredibly loyal to the people they love, they're resourceful, and they're dedicated. If you're a part of this house, then you're independent and value originality. Ravenclaws are curious and intuitive, which make them excellent problem solvers because they're never afraid to try new things or approach a situation in a unique way. If you're a Gryffindor, you're not afraid of embracing a challenge, or taking risks. This Harry Potter house is also known for its bravery, leadership, and chivalry, and its members make excellent friends because they're loyal til the end, or until they're given an important reason not to be.

What do the 4 houses of Hogwarts represent?

They pull a basilisk fang from its skeleton to use to destroy the Horcrux made from Helga Hufflepuff's cup. From there, first-year students are accompanied by the "Keeper of the Keys, Game and Grounds" (which was Rubeus Hagrid during the first novel) to small boats, which magically sail across the lake and get them near the entrance of Hogwarts. The older students ride up to the castle in carriages pulled by creatures called Thestrals. When the first-year students initially arrive at the castle, they wait in a small chamber off the entrance hall until the older students have taken their seats, and then enter the Great Hall for the Sorting Ceremony to determine their House assignments. The yearly house cup competition is underway as players compete in challenges of wizardry to achieve success.

For years, Hogwarts, its founders, and all students lived in property and peace; however, it didn’t last forever. One of the founders, Salazar Slytherin, had a very strong belief that Hogwarts should only be a place for pure-blood wizards and witches. The other founders did not share the same ideas, believing that all wizards and witches should have the opportunity to attend Hogwarts despite their heritage.

Rowling as ‘reminiscent of a badger’s sett’.The cozy, round, low-ceilinged room has a very cheerful decoration with shades of yellow and black and lots of plants. Over the wooden mantelpiece, there is a portrait of Helga Hufflepuff toasting her students with a small two-handled golden cup. The common room windows are just level with the ground of the castle, giving the sensation of barely being underground. A wide, circular room with arched windows where blue and bronze silks hung, with a large midnight blue carpet covered in stars that are reflected onto the domed ceiling, Ravenclaw’s common room is one of the airiest of the four house common rooms. By the door leading to the dormitories, there is a tall statue of Rowena Ravenclaw made of white marble.
